Start With the Use

A conference or an event needs a tote or a drawstring pack at a few dollars each with a large one-color logo. A staff or client gift needs a laptop backpack, a duffel or a cooler bag with an embroidered logo. A store needs paper or plastic bags that carry the purchase home. A school needs drawstring packs and backpacks in youth sizes. The use decides the fabric, the decoration and the price.

Fabrics

Cotton and canvas totes are the natural, reusable choice and print beautifully. Non-woven polypropylene is the lowest cost reusable bag and is the standard for grocery and trade show totes. 600D polyester and oxford nylon are the fabrics of backpacks, duffels and laptop bags because they resist abrasion and water. Jute and burlap give a rustic look. Insulated bags add a foil lining for coolers and lunch bags. Leather and leatherette are for messenger bags, travel wallets and luggage tags. Canvas tote bags in bulk are a common order for conferences and stores that want a bag people reuse.

Printing and Embroidery

Screen printing is the economical method for one to three color logos on totes, drawstring packs and non-woven bags and covers a large area. Full-color printing on white or natural fabric reproduces photographs and detailed artwork. Embroidery is the standard for backpacks, duffels, laptop bags and anything that should look like a retail product. Heat transfer and sublimation handle full-color designs on polyester.

Sizing the Logo

A tote prints a design up to 10 by 10 inches on the front. A drawstring pack prints a similar area. Backpacks and duffels take an embroidered logo 3 to 5 inches wide on a front panel or an end pocket. Paper and plastic bags print the logo on one or both faces. Keep text large, because a bag is read from a distance as it walks past.
