Not everyone enjoys pranks, and new hires may not know the team well enough to laugh. If you are organizing for a team, say in advance that April 1 jokes are welcome and let anyone who would rather sit it out tell you privately. Managers should check with HR if the company has any policy on workplace pranks.

With the owner's screen unlocked and their back turned (or with a teammate in on it), swap the desktop background for something absurd: a llama in a business suit, a very zoomed-in stock photo of a stapler, or the team's mascot. Skip fake crash or error screens. They look like a real problem and can end up as an IT ticket.

The Snack Box Switcheroo

• Buy a box of donuts and a vegetable tray
• Put the vegetables in the donut box and leave it in the break room
• Wait for the first person to open it
• Bring out the real donuts a few minutes later

The reveal is part of the joke, so have the donuts ready. If anyone on the team has food allergies or dietary limits, make sure the real treats work for them too.

The Desk Double

Before you arrive, prop a stuffed animal or a cardboard cutout in your own chair, dressed in your signature hoodie or glasses, with your name badge clipped on. Make the double of yourself, not a coworker, so the only person being teased is you. On a video call, the same idea works with a photo of yourself staring blankly at the camera.

The Sticky Note Takeover

Cover a teammate's monitor frame, desk phone or chair in sticky notes, ideally in a pattern or spelling out “APRIL FOOLS”. It takes a pad or two and comes off in seconds. Put a small piece of paper or tape over the optical sensor on the bottom of a mouse, with “April Fools” written on it so the joke is obvious once they flip it over. Stay close and reveal it if they start restarting the computer or reach for the phone to call IT.

Join the morning stand-up with a beach background, sunglasses and a straw hat, and act as if nothing is unusual. If someone asks, say the connection is a little spotty out here. Use it on internal calls only, never with a client.

Announce that your keyboard is acting up, then spend the morning leaving one letter out of every team chat message:

Brands have played April Fools jokes on the public for decades.
