Economy cotton totes at 5 to 6 oz are the lightest and lowest priced, from $1.21 each, and suit conference handouts. 10 oz canvas is the everyday grocery tote. 12 oz and heavier canvas is the boat tote weight: stiff, structured and built to carry a laptop or a case of drinks for years. The heavier the canvas, the better it takes embroidery and the longer it lasts.

Sizes and Shapes

A standard tote is about 15 inches wide by 16 inches tall with 20 to 22 inch handles that fit over a shoulder. Gusseted totes have a flat bottom and sides for groceries and giveaways with bulk. Zippered totes close for travel. Boat totes have reinforced handles that run under the bag. Beach totes are oversized with rope handles. Wine totes hold one or two bottles. Pick the shape by what the bag will carry, not by the print.

Printing and Embroidery

Screen printing is the standard: one or two ink colors on natural or colored canvas, at the lowest price per bag. Full color printing is available on laminated and polyester totes and on many cotton styles. Embroidered tote bags are the premium finish: a stitched logo on a 12 oz canvas boat tote reads like a retail bag and is what boutiques, resorts and real estate agents order for clients. The print area on a standard tote is about 10 inches wide by 10 inches tall.

Canvas tote bags in bulk are priced by quantity break: an order of 500 costs much less per bag than an order of 50. Canvas totes start at $1.11 and jute totes at $1.98 at the largest quantity tier. Most styles start at 50 or 100 bags, and about 1,100 can be ordered in quantities of 12 or fewer for a sample or a small event.
