Sizes

The 11 oz mug is the classic office size and the cheapest to print. The 15 oz mug is the most popular upgrade and holds a full home coffee pour. Campfire and bistro mugs run 12 to 16 oz with a wider, lower shape. Espresso cups at 3 to 4 oz and latte mugs at 14 to 17 oz suit cafes and hospitality orders. Many styles are sold with a matching saucer or a lid. Custom made mugs are available in all of these sizes.

Shapes and Finishes

The C-handle mug is the shape everyone recognizes. Two-tone mugs have a white outside with a colored handle and interior, which makes a one-color logo look like a planned design. Campfire mugs have a speckled, enamel look in stoneware. Matte and soft-touch mugs photograph well and read as premium. Glossy white is the surface for full-color and photo printing.

Printing Methods

Screen printing in one to three colors is the standard and the most economical for a logo, and the fired ink is dishwasher safe. Sublimation prints full-color artwork and photos around the whole mug on a coated white surface and is how custom photo mugs are made. Custom mugs with a picture need a high-resolution image for a sharp print. Laser etching on a colored mug exposes the white ceramic underneath for a tone-on-tone look. Color-changing mugs are black until hot liquid reveals the printed design.

Logo Placement and Artwork

The print area on an 11 oz mug is roughly 8.5 by 3.5 inches wrapping the body, and most logos sit at 2 to 3 inches wide on one or both sides. Fine lines under a point in thickness can fill in when fired, so simplify very detailed artwork. Right-handed people see the left side of the mug when they drink, so a single-side logo usually goes there.
