Custom Banners Buying Guide

Vinyl or Fabric

Vinyl banners are the outdoor standard: waterproof, UV resistant and finished with hems and grommets so they tie to a fence, a wall or a stage. Standard sizes run from 2 by 4 feet up to 4 by 12 feet, and larger sizes are available. Custom vinyl banners print in full color from a single artwork file. Mesh vinyl lets wind through and is the right choice for fences and tall installs. Fabric banners print richer color, hang without glare and pack without creasing, which makes them the choice for trade shows, stages and indoor retail. The same materials work for custom banners for birthdays and other private events.

Flags and Sail Signs

Feather and teardrop flags are the tall sail signs outside dealerships and events. Kits include the pole, the flag and a base, with a ground spike for grass, a cross base for pavement and a water-filled base for wind. Sizes run from about 8 to 15 feet tall, and the flag can be single-sided, which shows a mirror image on the back, or double-sided with a liner. Replacement flags fit the poles you already own. Hand flags, car flags, pennants and garden flags cover parades, games and yards.

Signs and Stands

Retractable banner stands roll a 33 by 80 inch graphic into a base that fits in a carry bag and sets up in a minute, which is why they are the standard trade show piece. Corrugated plastic signs with H-stakes are the yard sign and directional sign for events and campaigns. Aluminum and acrylic signs are for permanent installs. Hanging banners and bracket systems are for ceilings and light poles.

Artwork That Prints Well

Send vector artwork or an image at full size and at least 100 pixels per inch. Keep text and logos a few inches inside the edge so the hems and grommets do not cut into them. Large, high-contrast lettering reads from a distance; a banner read from the road needs letters at least a few inches tall per 10 feet of viewing distance. One message per banner works better than a paragraph.

How much does a custom banner cost?

Small vinyl banners start under $20 and a standard 3 by 6 foot vinyl banner is usually between $30 and $80 depending on material and finishing. Feather flag kits with hardware and retractable banner stands run higher. Request a quote with the size for an exact price.

Which banner material should I use outdoors?

Vinyl with hems and grommets is the outdoor standard, and mesh vinyl is better on fences and anywhere wind is a concern. Fabric banners are best indoors or under cover.

How do feather flags stand up?

Each kit includes a pole and a base. A ground spike pushes into grass or dirt, a cross base sits on pavement, and a water-filled or weighted base holds in wind. Replacement flags are sold for poles you already own.

What is the difference between single-sided and double-sided flags?

A single-sided flag prints through the fabric and shows a mirror image on the back. A double-sided flag has two printed layers with a blockout liner so the design reads correctly from both sides.

What artwork do you need for a banner?

A vector file or a high-resolution image at the final size, with important text kept a few inches inside the edge. We send a free proof showing the hems, grommets and layout before printing.
