How Many Players Are on a Kickball Team?
Most adult leagues in the US play by, or borrow from, the World Adult Kickball Association rulebook. Under the WAKA rules, each team must field at least 8 and no more than 10 players, and a pitcher and catcher are required throughout the game. A regulation game lasts seven innings or no more than 55 minutes, and the official ball is 10 inches across.
Carry a few more players than you field so absences do not leave you short, and order shirts for the whole roster plus one or two spares for new players who join mid-season. If you play in a local league that is not WAKA-affiliated, check its own roster minimum, since co-ed ratios and roster caps vary.
Kickball Shirt Ideas That Work on a Grass Field

Kickball teams usually wear matching tees rather than jerseys, and the WAKA rules only ask players to wear the athletic clothing designated for them and athletic shoes without metal cleats. That leaves the design up to you.
- Avoid green. A green shirt disappears against grass. Orange, red, royal blue, yellow and white all stand out from across the field and in team photos.
- Pick colors by tone. Dark shirts with a bold block font suit a cool name like Iron Foot. Bright colors and a rounder font suit a funny name like Grass Stain Gang.
- Put a nickname on the back. Many rec leagues do not require numbers, so a nickname or a short joke on the back is part of the fun. Check your league first if it does use numbers.
- Choose the fabric for the season. Cotton tees are fine for evening spring games. For hot summer afternoons, a polyester performance tee stays lighter when it gets sweaty.

Frequently asked questions
How many players are on a kickball team?
Under the World Adult Kickball Association rules, a team must field at least 8 and no more than 10 players, with a pitcher and catcher required throughout the game. Most teams carry a few extra players for absences.
How long is a kickball game?
A regulation WAKA game lasts seven innings or no more than 55 minutes. Local leagues that are not WAKA-affiliated may set their own limits.
What was kickball originally called?
Early written versions called it kicking baseball. Dr. Emmett Dunn Angell described the game under that name in a 1910 book, and a Cincinnati playground supervisor, Nicholas C. Seuss, later made his own claim to inventing it.
Is a beer-themed team name OK in a kickball league?
In a 21-and-over social league it usually is, and many adult leagues finish at a bar. Family, school and church leagues will normally reject it, so save those names for adult play.
Do kickball teams need numbers on their shirts?
Many rec leagues do not require numbers, so a nickname or short joke on the back is common. If your league does use numbers for scorekeeping, ask for the rules before you order.
