Libero and Number Rules to Know Before You Order

Volleyball has two uniform rules that catch first-time organizers. Both come from the high school (NFHS) rulebook, and many club and adult leagues follow something similar. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s summary of the NFHS volleyball uniform changes sets them out:

• The libero must stand out. The libero’s top has to clearly contrast with the main color of the teammates’ tops, ignoring trim. The same team colors arranged differently do not count, so plan a separate libero jersey in a different color when you order.
• Numbers must be easy to read. Numbers have to be plain numerals in a solid color that clearly contrasts with the jersey body. A border no longer counts as contrast, and number 00 is not allowed.
• Order one or two spare libero tops. Some teams use two liberos across a season, and they need contrasting tops with their own numbers.

For the color itself, match the shade to the name: navy, black or crimson for a fierce name; orange, lime or hot pink for a funny one; sand, ocean blue or coral for a beach team; and earth tones for mud, where pastels are ruined after one game.

Planning a Dig Pink Match

Dig Pink is a program of The Side-Out Foundation, a volleyball charity that funds research into metastatic (stage IV) breast cancer. Teams run Dig Pink matches, most often during the fall season, and raise money through the foundation. Dig Pink is a registered trademark, and the foundation asks that any event using the name supports Side-Out directly, so register your match with them before you print the words on a shirt.
